Iowa poll sends warning signs for GOP congresswoman in competitive district

Iowa Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of the 1st District received a warning signal in a poll Monday that put her slightly behind her Democratic rival.

The new Des Moines Register poll shows Miller-Meeks trailing Democrat Christina Bohannan by three points. It's the closest race in the state, with Republicans favored in Iowa's three other House races.

Miller-Meeks defeated a rival in the Republican primary earlier this year but now has 46 percent support to Bohannan's 49 percent.

The Register poll surveyed 811 Iowa adults, including 656 likely voters, from Sept. 8-11. The poll gives a margin of error of 3.8%.

The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll has found steady shifts in Miller-Meeks' district throughout the year. In June, pollsters found Miller-Meeks the favorite in a matchup with Bohannon by 53% to 41%. Another poll in February showed Bohannon leading by 49% to 45%.

Meanwhile, the Cook Political Report still has Miller-Meeks' district in the “leaning Republican” category. In August, Fox News' power rankings also had the district as “likely Republican.”

Miller-Meeks' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

NEW POLL SHOWS HARRIS IS RISING IN IOWA, A STATE HE THINKS WILL BE SAFE

Some Republican voters in the Register poll expressed frustration with Miller-Meeks for not being supportive enough of former President Donald Trump.

“Our own Republicans are so cowardly and indecisive that they're almost worthless, and that's the category I'd put Meeks in,” Jim Schenk, a 62-year-old Republican, told the paper.

“She's just sitting there doing nothing,” he added. “The only thing you can say about her is that she's not actively harming us like a Democrat would.”

Schenk said she believes Miller-Meeks has been hesitant to defend Trump because she knows she represents a vulnerable district.
