The Illinois young population is decreasing, warned a Chicago Tribune publishing house.

“An increasingly lower youth population means a potential for decrease, not only economically, but in civic energy, creativity and community life. That is bad news for a state that depends on young people to boost their workforce and future,” said the editorial.

The Editorial Board of Tribune described the conditions of a population that ages in Illinois, adding that the state of the meadow is “aging faster than the rest of the country.”

The Board urged the governor of Illinois JB Pritzker, D., to take measures on the subject, citing that the state “desperately” needs “to retain and attract young people.” Pritzker signed the legislation that makes the university more accessible and affordable. The measure occurred after Pritzker cited the investigation of the Illinois Higher Education Board that shows that almost half of the state's high school graduates fled to universities outside the State and did not return.

“There is a 70% probability that when they reach what that university is out of Illinois, they do not return,” Pritzker said at a press conference in March. “That is a real problem, so we want to keep our best and brightest in the state.”

Other factors are promoting the population of the aging of the State.

The Illinois retiree population is growing. Currently, the median age is 39.4, five years older than in 2000, according to the editorial.

That is “constantly increasing,” added the board. However, the State was younger than the rest of the country, on average, 25 years ago.

The number of “adults working in the main age” decreased in Illinois by 1% from 2020 to 2024, while the rest of the country increased by 2%.

The Board detailed the cause of the population in decline of young people is due to the loss of the population, the “out of migration” and the low birth rates.

The governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, signed a list of legislation with the aim of making the university more affordable and accessible as young people flee from the state and probably never return.

“Illinois faces a double demographic bond. Not only fertile women remain in the state due to persistent supervision, but those who stay have fewer children than their counterparts in another place. Our birth rate already is left behind the majority of states, particularly those in the south and west, and the gap is growing,” the tribune wrote. “The long -term implications for our workforce, the tax base and economic vitality are difficult to ignore.”
