IDF says it carried out retaliatory strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon and attacked Hamas in Gaza


The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday morning it was carrying out retaliatory strikes against the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.

This comes after the IDF said Hezbollah launched around 115 airstrikes toward civilian areas in northern Israel in the span of a few hours.

The Israel Defense Forces said its defensive networks are deployed in northern Israel and are in a state of maximum readiness to thwart threats targeting the area. Air defense systems had intercepted multiple projectiles over Haifa, Israel.

The military said attacks against Hezbollah will continue and intensify.

The IDF also said the Israeli Air Force carried out a pinpoint strike against Hamas terrorists at a compound in the northern Gaza Strip.

The IDF says numerous measures were taken prior to the attack to mitigate the risk of harm to civilians, including the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance and additional intelligence information.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin several times over the weekend about developments in northern Israel.

Gallant briefed Austin on the specific operation carried out by the IDF to eliminate Hezbollah operations unit chief and Radwan Forces commander Ibrahim Aqil, who is a senior Hezbollah leader and planner of several terror attacks against Israel and who is also wanted by the United States for the murder of its citizens.

The minister also spoke about Israel's defensive posture and operations against Hezbollah's ongoing attacks on northern Israeli towns and civilian areas. He said the goal is to ensure that communities in northern Israel can return to their homes.

Gallant also told Austin about the Israel Defense Forces' current activities in Gaza against Hamas and stressed his commitment to freeing the more than 100 hostages still held by Hamas.

He expressed his gratitude to Austin and American leaders for reaffirming their commitment to Israel.
