A 30-year-old Honduran native who had been living illegally in the U.S. has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that killed an Arkansas woman earlier this month.
Maynor Yair Sorto-Herrera was arrested Sept. 9 by Arkansas State Police for the crash that occurred the morning before. State police say Sorto-Herrera was driving a 2008 Ford F150 when he crossed over onto the wrong side of the road before colliding head-on with a 2016 Honda CRV, killing Jennifer Ann Morton, 48, of Little Rock.
Police located Sorto Herrera as he was walking away from the scene. He was taken to a hospital for examination of his injuries before being booked into the Pulaski County Detention Center.
The suspect is charged with negligent homicide, assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, violation of the Concealed Weapons Act, reckless driving, driving without a license, failure to stop after a fatal accident and traffic violations.

In October 2018, Sorto Herrera was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol near Laredo, Texas. He was expelled from the United States and taken back to Honduras on November 5, 2018. Authorities are not sure when he returned to the United States. He is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to a police news release, Morton worked as a respiratory therapist in the Infant and Toddler Unit at Arkansas Children's Hospital. An obituary on the funeral home's website says she worked at the children's hospital for 24 years, was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church and “loved spoiling her nieces and nephews.”

“We are deeply saddened for the Morton family, who is devastated by the loss of Jennifer, who dedicated her life to the compassionate care of children,” ASP Col. Mike Hagar said in a statement. “I know our Soldiers want to honor her memory by doing their part to ensure this man is held accountable for her death.”
