Here's the deadline to get Real ID and why you need it

For many, ringing in the new year will also mean getting a new driver's license.

The federal Real ID Law goes into effect on May 7, meaning a standard state-issued driver's license or ID card will no longer allow people to pass through airport security or enter federal buildings.

Instead, they will need to obtain the enhanced driver's license known as Real ID.

Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 with the goal of creating a national standard for identification because driver's licenses in some states are not acceptable forms of identification for crossing borders or boarding commercial airplanes.

The planned implementation date was originally announced for 2008, but has since been delayed several times.

Nearly 18.4 million Californians out of a population of nearly 40 million already had a Real ID as of Dec. 5, according to recent data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Why do I need Real ID?

Starting May 7, Real ID will only be accepted to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities such as federal courthouses and military bases. According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, traditional state-issued driver's licenses or identification cards will no longer be accepted.

The California Real ID has an image of a bear and a star in the upper right corner showing that it meets federal standards.

How do I get a real ID?

To apply for a Real ID, Californians must complete an online application at REALID.dmv.ca.gov and upload their documents, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Individuals must visit a DMV office and bring their documents, application confirmation, and $35 in fees to complete the application.

Here are the necessary documents:

  • Proof of identity, including an original or certified document (such as a passport or birth certificate). Legal name change documents are needed if the name on the proof of identity differs from other documents.
  • Proof of California residency, including two paper documents (such as a bank statement or utility bill).
  • Social security number
