Fourth of July Fireworks in Southern California: Where to Watch Them

Californians looking to enjoy fireworks on the Fourth of July will have plenty of options Thursday depending on where they live.

Although fireworks are illegal in the city of Los Angeles, no matter what the neighbors down the street may be doing or saying, there are approximately 300 cities across the state that allow the sale and possession of legal fireworks that meet the State Fire Marshal’s “safe and sane” seal of approval.

The full list of cities can be found here.

Depending on location, there may be specific time restrictions, so anyone wishing to light a firework should check with their local fire department for complete information. Dry brush and other flammable materials can catch fire if the right spark occurs, and children should never handle a firework without parental supervision, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Anyone caught violating the state's fireworks mandates can face a fine of up to $50,000, imprisonment for up to a year, or both, according to Cal Fire.

The agency has additional advice for anyone looking to light a legal firework or two during the holidays:

  • Do not place any part of your body over a firework after the fuse is lit.
  • Back off! Move away after lighting a firework.
  • Do not point any lit fireworks at other people.
  • Do not experiment or attempt to relight fireworks.
  • Do not wear loose clothing
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket

While dogs, cats and other pets may not appreciate the summer tradition, here is a list of fireworks shows on display Thursday in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. Consider checking with each location before you head out for any last-minute changes or cancellations.
