Emma Hayes is only 70 days into her tenure as head coach of the U.S. women's soccer team, but the Americans already have one major tournament win.

The United States defeated Brazil 1-0 on Saturday to win the country's first gold medal in the sport since 2012.

Mallory Swanson scored the go-ahead goal in the second half, and the United States earned the victory.

Hayes, who is from London, spoke to NBC's Mike Tirico after the match and said he hoped to win a gold medal for the United States.

“I just love it. I come from a place where I want players to have fun and I've been at a club for 12 years where I've had great success. But I was desperate to do well for this country,” Hayes said. “I'm really excited because it's not every day you win a gold medal.”

Hayes was asked why she was desperate to win gold for the United States.

“I love America. It made me. And I always say that. It definitely made me,” he said.

Hayes agreed to take over as head coach of the United States women's national team on November 14, 2023, but remained with Chelsea until the end of the Women's Super League (WSL) season. Hayes led Chelsea to another WSL title.
