A Los Angeles Dodgers fan almost became the next Jeffrey Maier Friday night during Game 1 of the World Series.
New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres made a pitch to left field in the top of the ninth inning and it looked like the ball was going to leave the park for a key home run. However, the fan went over the fence and it was determined that he had interfered with the play.

Torres had to settle for a double when the referees confirmed fan interference.
The FOX broadcast showed the man leaving the left field area of Dodger Stadium, in case the play was reviewed and the Yankees were given the all-clear.

Fans immediately remembered the Maier incident in the 1996 American League Championship Series between the Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.
Maier cleared the right field fence on Derek Jeter's home run and deflected the ball that was going to at least go over the head of Baltimore outfielder Tony Tarasco.
Jeter's home run propelled the Yankees to victory in Game 1 of that series. They won the series en route to a World Series title.

Friday night's play would have given the Yankees the lead. MLB did not have a replay in 1996 and used the discretion of referee Richie García on the play. García, after reviewing the replay, admitted his mistake.
