Construction delays cause major traffic congestion at LAX

Construction delays caused heavy traffic at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday morning, with some travelers saying it took them nearly an hour to overcome the congestion.

LAX announced lane closures for construction work on Century Boulevard Saturday night, but delays kept the lanes closed until Sunday morning.

The construction was intended to facilitate the work of the Automated People Mover, a driverless transit system designed to relieve traffic around the airport in preparation for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Around 11 am, LAX posted on X (formerly Twitter), “We anticipate increased traffic congestion at LAX. “Guests are encouraged to arrive early, reserve parking in advance and use cell phone waiting lots to assist with vehicle traffic.”

The account added that traffic can affect flight schedules.

At 1:00 p.m., account X @FlyLAXstats posted that it was taking drivers approximately 52 minutes to traverse the upper level of the airport and 20 minutes to traverse the lower level. Earlier in the daythe top level took up to 91 minutes to arrive.

One X user said people were abandoning their Ubers and walking to the airport. Some travelers posted about the “nightmare” situation on social media.
