Authorities arrested a man who they allegedly caught trying to drown his children on a beach early Saturday morning.
Romney Desronvil, 42, of Queens, New York, is accused of “deliberately” trying to drown his children on a Connecticut beach.
In a news release, the West Haven Police Department explained that the “heinous act” took place shortly after 2:30 a.m.
At that time, a police officer patrolling the area heard “significant screams” and noticed an SUV parked on the beach.
“As the officer approached, he heard significant screams coming from the water,” the Police Department said. “As he moved toward the commotion, it was evident that an adult man and two small children were in the water.”

When the patrol officer entered the water, the suspect allegedly walked with his children into Long Island Sound and yelled at the officer, “Stay back!”
“It was obvious at this point that the man … was deliberately drowning his children,” according to the statement.
“The agents immediately entered the water and at that moment they were almost 100 meters from the coast,” the statement added. “Other officers on scene joined members of the West Shore Fire Department and entered the water using the West Shore Fire boat.”

The children were recovered by the officer and rushed to a local hospital for treatment. At nine in the morning on Saturday, both children were in the intensive care unit.
“Without a doubt, the quick response of our patrol officers saved the lives of these children,” the statement concludes. “The communication and collaborative efforts made by the West Shore Fire Department and eventually the New Haven Police Department allowed for immediate medical assistance and also the arrest of Desronvil.”
“Our Detective Division has now taken over the investigation and more information will be provided as the investigation progresses.”
