Several arrests were made at the Congressional Charity Baseball Game on Wednesday night after individuals who appeared to be climate change protesters stormed the field at Nationals Park in DC.
The game, which raises money for local charities in the DC area, features Democrats and Republicans from the US House of Representatives and Senate.
Climate change protesters were seen chanting with signs reading “Stop Playing with Our Future” and T-shirts saying “End Fossil Fuels” before several people took to the field.
A group known as Climate Defiance took credit for the display in a tweet on X.

“Update: Eight of us have been arrested for shutting down the Congressional baseball game. Now they're behind bars. Make no mistake: It's members of Congress who should be locked up.”
The group also boasted about their mission on social media and caused the game to be paused.
“We've taken the field at the Congressional Baseball Game and the game is FROZEN! Congress sends billions of public dollars to subsidize deadly fossil fuels, but the police are attacking us. This Chevron-sponsored game is not can continue. This is inconceivable.” the group wrote.

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) quickly arrived and escorted the protesters away and the game was able to resume. The USCP confirmed that eight people were arrested.
“We are proud of our officers who are working to keep everyone safe during tonight's Congressional Charity Baseball Game. When eight people attempted to protest on the field, our officers quickly detained and arrested them. All eight people are being charged of federal charges. – Interference with a member of the US Capitol Police,” the Capitol Police wrote in a statement on X.
A small group of anti-Israel protesters were also seen among the crowd. The group displayed a Free Palestine and Palestine flag in the right field section next to the foul pole. The group's message was met with boos from others in the stands.

This isn't the first time the annual charity game has sparked controversy.
In recent years, the event has drawn increased scrutiny after a gunman opened fire on Republicans who were at the stadium early to practice in 2017.
