CNN data guru says Harris struggles with 'underperformance' among young voters amid Taylor Swift support

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Thursday that Kamala Harris is still struggling to gain traction among young voters and called Taylor Swift's recent endorsement “absolutely welcomed” by Harris' campaign.

Enten noted that at this point in the race in 2020, President Biden held a 28-point lead among voters under 30. Biden’s lead fell to seven points in July of this year, just before he dropped out of the race. As the Democratic nominee, Harris managed to improve Biden’s standing somewhat with the critical voting bloc, reaching a 15-point lead this month. But she’s still significantly behind Biden’s numbers in 2020, Enten said.

“Kamala Harris will welcome an endorsement from Taylor Swift if she can sway younger voters, because the bottom line is this: Kamala Harris is actually not doing as well among younger voters as you might necessarily expect a Democrat to be doing based on history,” he told CNN's Kate Bolduan.

Swift, an outspoken critic of Former President Trumpendorsed Harris after Tuesday's presidential debate. In an Instagram post she signed as “childless cat lady,” the pop icon said Harris “fights for rights and causes that I think need a warrior to stand up for them.”

YOUNG VOTERS IN SWING STATES OFFER ADVICE FOR KAMALA HARRIS: 'THERE'S A NEED FOR MORE TRANSPARENCY'

Enten said Swift could provide a significant boost to the campaign if she can convince fans to register to vote, something he cited as another hurdle for Harris in states like Pennsylvania and North Carolina, where the number of new registered Democrats has dropped significantly since 2020.

“The bottom line is that Republicans have done a much better job than Democrats in registering voters over the last four years,” Enten said.

Swift apparently understood the mission. The link she attached to her message urging people to register to vote was visited 337,826 times in just two days, NBC News reported.

The pop icon repeated her call to register to vote in her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, telling fans: “If you're over 18, please register to vote for something else that's very important to us, the 2024 presidential election.”

Young voters across the country recently told Fox News Digital that the economy, immigration and foreign policy are their top concerns heading into November.

According to a recent New York Times/Siena poll, Harris leads Trump by 10 percentage points among voters ages 18 to 29.
