Children and adults on a Wisconsin field trip were injured in an accident involving a tractor and a wagon in an apple orchard

A field trip to a Wisconsin apple orchard failed after at least 17 people, including children, were injured when a tractor overturned.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Chippewa Fire District Deputy Chief Corey Jeffers said two hay carts being pulled by a tractor overturned at the Bushel and Peck apple orchard in Lafayette, Wisconsin.

Jeffers said three patients were transported with life-threatening injuries, five with serious injuries and nine others were transported by ambulance. One patient was transported by helicopter and others were taken to the hospital in private vehicles.

Authorities did not share details of the injuries.

Hakes said the car lost control while going down a hill and when they tried to stop it, it abruptly rolled over.

“During incidents like these, it is imperative that we focus on the safety of the victims as well as reunification efforts between the children and their parents,” he said. “I personally went to the scene and helped calm the children as well as reunite them with their parents.”
