According to a new study, a basic element of the common pantry may be the secret to reduce cholesterol levels.
The researchers from the Illinois Institute of Technology found that the chickpeas, also called chickpea Beans, can have reductive cholesterol qualities.
Participants who consumed a cup of chickpeas daily for 12 weeks experienced a significant reduction in their high cholesterol levels.

The investigation, which involved adults with prediabetes, was presented at the 2025 Nutrition Conference in Orlando last week.
The researchers also studied the effects of the daily consumption of black beans, but discovered that these were not as effective as chickpeas.

Dr. William W. Li, author of the book “Eat to Beat Disease: The new science of how his body can heal himself,” he broke down in an interview with Fox News Digital. (He was not involved in the study).
Li said chickpeas can reduce cholesterol levels through intestinal bioma, which contains billions of bacteria.
“The way the chickpeas work is to provide dietary fiber, which improves and activates the intestinal microbiome,” Li said.
“You can dry, roast and eat as a snack.”
“Among its many functions, well -fed healthy bacteria, fed by chickpeas, improve the metabolism of lipids, which reduces blood cholesterol. And reduce inflammation by releasing metabolites called short chain fatty acids.”

While it may seem discouraging to incorporate a cup of chickpeas every day, Li said there are many tasty recipes out there.
The chickpeas, he said, “can be dry, roast and eat like a snack.”

“They can be stew along with spices and onions and other vegetables for an abundant and healthy meal.”
While there are many ways to cook chickpeas, adopting a healthy approach is crucial, Li said.

Consumers should avoid using excessive oil while cooking the legume and staying away from frying.
Instead, said, roasting, stewing or boiling chickpeas are excellent ways to cook them while maintaining their nutritional benefits.

“Use healthy oils to cook them, such as extra virgin olive oil,” Li said. “Add other healthy ingredients, such as onions, garlic and turmeric to improve the health benefits of the dish.”
