The still-unnamed employee, 35, was attacked at approximately 6:20 p.m. and subsequently ran into the building for help. He was stabbed several times in the neck and abdomen and was bleeding profusely in the lobby when medics arrived, who transported him to Brookdale Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are searching for a suspect, dressed in black, who was wearing a baseball cap and a balaclava.

So far, there is no information on what precipitated the gruesome attack, but the area has converted several hotels into homeless housing and has faced its fair share of violent crime in the past.

New York City has been dealing with violent crime on its streets and on public transportation, a problem that is only exacerbated by a surge of illegal immigrants arriving without shelter. Mayor Eric Adams has repeatedly expressed frustration with the federal government and argued that the city lacks the resources to take care of them.

Since April 2022, an estimated 220,000 immigrants have arrived in the city, and more than 58,000 are currently cared for by New York City taxpayers, according to City Hall reports.
