A man was shot Sunday next to his Lamborghini during an attempted robbery outside Bloomingdale's at South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa police said. The gunman remains at large.
Around 8:40 p.m., a man attempted to rob the victim in a parking lot of the upscale mall. The gunman shot the victim in the leg and fled before officers arrived, according to a social media post from the Police Department.
No arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon, a police spokesman confirmed. The victim was taken to a hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening injury, according to the Facebook post.
A video of the incident broadcast by ABC7 showed a group of people surrounding the victim, who was lying on the ground next to a Lamborghini SUV.
“You hear a gunshot and you see all these people,” one witness told local independent media group OCHawk. “I guess it looked like they were arguing, but they started fighting and then… the guy fell to the ground.”
A news cameraman at the scene said the gunman attempted to take the victim's Rolex watch and car, the Daily Pilot reported.
“South Coast Plaza is extremely grateful for the quick response of the Costa Mesa Police Department to this unfortunate event,” read a statement from the mall. “We wish the victim a full and speedy recovery.”
Police said the incident was isolated and there were no active threats in the immediate area. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Detective J. Lopez at (714) 754-4873.
