2024 Cash Dash: Harris nearly triples Trump's fundraising haul last month

Vice President Kamala Harris raised a staggering $361 million in funding in August, her campaign announced Friday morning, in what she touted as “the largest fundraiser of the 2024 cycle.”

The Democratic presidential nominee's fundraising haul was nearly triple the $130 million Donald Trump's campaign announced Wednesday that the former president raised last month.

Harris has enjoyed a surge in fundraising in the nearly seven weeks since she replaced President Biden as the Democratic Party's 2024 ticket leader.

The vice president's campaign noted that Harris has raised more than $615 million in funding since July 21, when Biden, in a surprise announcement, ended his reelection campaign and endorsed his running mate.

Harris' campaign also touted August's fundraising as “the best month of grassroots fundraising in presidential history.”

The vice president's team also showed off what it called “a massive war chest,” reporting it had $404 million in cash at the end of last month. That's more than $100 million more than the $295 million the Trump campaign said it had in its coffers.

Harris' fundraising in August was higher than the $310 million the Democratic ticket raised in July, while Trump's fundraising last month was slightly lower than the $138.7 million he raised in July.

“In a short period of time, Vice President Harris' candidacy has galvanized a historic, broad and diverse coalition with the kind of enthusiasm, energy and determination that wins close elections,” Harris' campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement. “As we enter the final stretch of this election, we are making sure that every hard-earned dollar goes toward winning over the voters who will decide this election.”

The former president's team said in a statement Wednesday revealing its fundraising figures that its cash on hand ensured it had “the resources necessary to propel President Trump's campaign to victory.”

The Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee enjoyed a fundraising advantage over Trump and the Republican National Committee earlier this year. But Trump and the RNC outraised Biden and the DNC by $331 million, compared with $264 million raised during the second quarter from April to June 2024.

Biden enjoyed a brief surge in fundraising after his disastrous performance in his late June debate with Trump, as donors briefly shelled out large amounts of money in a show of support for the 81-year-old president.

But Biden’s halting and unclear debate performance also immediately fueled questions about his physical and mental abilities to remain another four years in the White House, and spurred a growing chorus of calls from within his own party for the president to end his bid for a second term. The brief surge in fundraising didn’t last, and by early July it began to slow significantly.

Fundraising, along with polling, is a key metric in campaign politics and a measure of a candidate's popularity and the strength of his or her campaign. Money raised can be used to, among other things, hire staff, expand grassroots outreach and voter mobilization efforts, pay for the production and distribution of television, radio, digital media, and mail-in ads, and for candidate travel.
