A bus crashed into cars and motorcycles after its brakes apparently failed in the Indonesian province of West Java, killing at least 11 people, mostly students, and injuring dozens more, officials said Sunday.
The bus carrying 61 students and teachers was returning to a high school in Depok, on the outskirts of Jakarta, the capital, on Saturday night from the mountain resort area of Bandung after a graduation celebration, the spokesman said. West Java Police, Jules Abraham Abast.
It accelerated uncontrollably on a downhill road and crossed lanes, crashing into several cars and motorcycles before crashing into a utility pole, he said.

Nine people died at the scene and two others died later in hospital, including a teacher and a local motorist, Abast said. Fifty-three other people were hospitalized with injuries, including some in critical condition, he said.
“We are still investigating the cause of the accident, but a preliminary investigation showed that the bus's brakes malfunctioned,” Abast said.
Local television images showed the wrecked bus in the dark, on its side, surrounded by rescuers, police and bystanders as ambulances evacuated the injured.

Traffic accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor safety and infrastructure standards.
Last year, a tour bus with an apparently drowsy driver crashed into a billboard on a highway in East Java, killing at least 14 people and injuring 19 others. In 2021, a tour bus plunged into a ravine in the mountain town of Puncak, West Java, after its brakes apparently failed, killing at least 27 people and injuring 39 others.
