Prince Joachim of Denmark will attend Queen Margaret's abdication alone


Prince Joachim of Denmark will attend the abdication of his mother, Queen Margaret II, without his wife and children, almost two years after they were stripped of their royal titles.

“Prince Joachim will be there, but the children are going to school, there is no special reason,” a palace spokesman said. Hello Magazine.

On Sunday, Denmark will welcome a new King and Queen when Crown Prince Frederick and his wife, Crown Princess Mary, ascend the throne. However, despite the accession, not all Danish royal families will attend.

Last year, Prince Joachim and Princess Mary moved to the United States, just nine months after the queen reportedly stripped the prince's four children, Nikolai, Felix, Henrik and Athena, of their royal titles from “Your Highness.”

Queen Margaret's second son shares Count Henrik and Countess Athena with Marie, and her eldest sons, Count Felix and Count Nikolai, with his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.

At the time, Queen Margaret apologized to members of her family who were “saddened” by her decision.

“In recent days there have been strong reactions to my decision regarding the future use of titles for Prince Joachim's four children. That affects me, of course,” he wrote.

“My decision took a long time to come. With my 50 years on the throne, it is natural to look back and forward. It is my duty and my desire as Queen to ensure that the monarchy always adapts to the times.

“Sometimes this means that difficult decisions have to be made and it will always be difficult to find the right moment.”

Prince Joachim, Princess Mary and Alexandra spoke after Queen Margaret, 83, announced the title change in September 2022.

Queen Margaret, however, maintained that the plans had been in the works for some time and said the move (which will come into force on January 1, 2023) was made in the best interests of her grandchildren.

The Danish monarch will step down as queen on Sunday after 52 years on the throne.

Announcing his shock abdication during his 2023 New Year's Eve speech, he said: “I have decided that now is the right time.

“On January 14, 2024, 52 years after succeeding my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark. “I will hand over the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”

Queen Margaret will be replaced by her son, Crown Prince Frederick, on January 14.
