Maren Morris has found comfort and strength in her four-year-old son, Hayes Andrew.
Last year, the “Girl” singer went through some major life changes after divorcing her husband, Ryan Hurd, and coming out as bisexual. However, one constant has kept her grounded: her son.
In conversation with People ahead of the release of their new EP, RestMorris, 34, reflected on how helpful Hayes has been over the past 12 months, saying he's “definitely helped me get through a lot of this year.”
“Whether he knows it or not,” she added, “I doubt he does, but I just want to be a good mother to him.”
Morris filed for divorce from Hurd, 37, in October 2023, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of their split. The two were married for nearly six years and tied the knot in 2018. Their divorce was finalized in January.
Five months after Morris and Hurd split, the “Chasing After You” vocalist came out as bisexual. In honor of Pride Month, Morris took to Instagram and opened up to her followers alongside a series of images from her concert in Phoenix, Arizona. “Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+,” the singer wrote. “Happy Pride.”
Amid the shift in family dynamics, Morris has tried to offer Hayes the same strength he has given her. She has tried to “put on a brave face and a coherent front,” even when it comes to interacting with Hurd.
Morris said People: “I think he’s been through a lot and I’m sure there’s a lot of confusion because he’s so young. But I also feel like Ryan and I have done a great job of being great parents to him.”
Morris' close relationship with Hayes has continued since their family split up, and he accompanied her on RSVP's Redex tour. According to the music icon, Hayes loves traveling from city to city and living the rock star lifestyle on the tour bus.
“He loves to travel, which has been really fun this summer, having Hayes on tour,” she said. “I don’t know, we feel like adventure buddies a little bit, and we’re going to be on this bus ride forever. It makes me really happy when he’s on tour and the fact that he loves it here so much.”
After years of perseverance and hard work, the standout singer will finally release her EP. Morris has been trying to break into the music industry for a while, auditioning and applying for singing competitions such as American Idol, The voiceand America's Got TalentWhile she may not have appreciated being rejected at the time, Morris is grateful for the journey because it has brought her to where she is now.
Talking to Howard Stern on Sirius XM In December 2023, Morris detailed how she felt after the rejections. “It was horrible, it hurt for sure,” she admitted. “I’m very lucky that they said ‘no,’ because I wasn’t ready to be in the spotlight. The music wasn’t there, my voice was still maturing… It would have been a fucking nightmare.”
