The impact of evening exercise on sleep varies from person to person. Some may find it energizing, while others may experience overstimulation.
We all know that exercising regularly is important for overall well-being. But equally important is choosing the right time to reap the benefits of sweating. Most choose to exercise during the early hours of the morning to boost energy during the day, while others, especially late risers, hit the gym late at night due to their hectic work schedules. But a long-standing question that resonates in the minds of fitness fanatics is: Is it ideal to exercise before bed?
Speaking similarly, Dr Meenakshi Jain, director of internal medicine at Max Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi, said: “Exercising at night can affect our sleep schedule as it raises core body temperature and stimulates the release of adrenaline and endorphins, which can make it more difficult to fall asleep immediately after exercising,” reported India Today.
Going deeper, he stated that our circadian rhythm, which controls our sleep-wake cycles, works in reverse. There is a natural drop in temperature during the night hours as part of this rhythm, which tells our body that it is time to sleep.
Dr. Meenakshi Jain also suggests avoiding large meals right before exercising as they can cause discomfort during physical activity.
Advantages of exercising before bed
Corporal temperature regulation
Exercise increases body temperature and subsequently the body cools down naturally. This cooling effect can help you fall asleep as it reflects the natural drop in body temperature that occurs during the early stages of sleep.
Reduce stress and anxiety
Workouts release endorphins, which can relieve stress and anxiety.
Improved sleep cycle
According to some studies, nighttime exercise can improve sleep architecture, leading to a more balanced sleep structure.
Cons of exercising before bed
Elevated heart rate
Intense exercise increases heart rate and adrenaline levels, making it difficult for some people to relax and fall asleep immediately after exercising.
Sleep disruption
Excessive exercise close to bedtime could disrupt the transition to the deeper stages of sleep, thereby reducing overall sleep quality.
However, the impact of evening exercise on sleep varies from person to person. Some may find it energizing, while others may experience overstimulation.
So, are you still wondering when is the best time to go to the gym? Dr. Jain explained that it varies depending on individual schedules, preferences, and physiological factors. According to some research, late afternoon to early evening may be optimal for performance, as muscle function and body temperature are at their peak during this time. However, morning workouts have their benefits, such as increasing energy levels and metabolism throughout the day.
In short, exercising before bed is acceptable, but fitness enthusiasts should be careful.
