Can diabetics donate blood? A doctor offers key guidelines

Diabetes is not transmitted through a blood transfusion.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease caused by a decrease in the production of insulin in the body or the inability to use insulin.

Diabetes is a dangerous disease where a person's blood sugar levels go out of control and can cause organ damage. While the disease cannot be eliminated, it can be controlled with the help of medications and insulin. Often, many viral and bacterial infections, including HIV, can be transmitted from one person to another through blood, but can this happen in the case of diabetes as well? Let's find out the truth from a doctor.

Dr Sonia Rawat, Director, Preventive Health Department, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, shared in an exclusive interview with News18 that diabetes cannot be transmitted through blood.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease caused by a decrease in insulin production or the body's inability to use it. The disease is not transmitted through viruses or bacteria, but is mainly caused by genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors.

One may also wonder whether diabetic patients can donate blood. Dr Sonia Rawat says that diabetic patients can donate blood after following certain steps.

Diabetic patients who have their blood sugar level under control and do not have any other disease can donate blood. If a patient's diabetes is not controlled or if he or she has any other disease, blood donation is not recommended. All diabetic patients should consult a doctor and undergo a check-up before donating blood.

According to health experts, a diabetic patient's blood sugar level should be within normal limits at the time of blood donation. Diabetic patients with high or low blood sugar levels are advised not to donate blood. If the blood donor is taking diabetes medications, he or she should ensure that these medications do not have any side effects on donating blood.
