Marathon runner and TikTok executive Govind Sandhu, 38, opens up about his non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Govind Sandhu talks about his cancer diagnosis and the ignored symptoms that preceded it after finishing a half marathon.
After finishing a half marathon, Bondi marathon runner Govind Sandhu, 38, revealed his unexpected diagnosis of stage four non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Sandhu is in good health. Given Sandhu’s active lifestyle and her role as an executive overseeing global music partnerships at TikTok Australia, his diagnosis came as a surprise to her.
Sandhu revealed in an emotional Instagram video the three warning signs she initially ignored that ultimately resulted in her diagnosis in early May. “The next day, I just went downhill with a swollen knee, although I thought it was because I had injured it in a pile of snow when I was in Hobart running some trails,” Sandhu explained.
“I was experiencing severe body aches, sweating and all the symptoms that make you think you have the flu or Covid-19. And my condition worsened over the course of four weeks,” he added. After taking part in the Sydney Half Marathon, his condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting him to seek medical attention.
Sandhu’s story is a vital reminder of the value of paying attention to one’s body and seeking medical help when strange symptoms don’t go away. “First, it’s important to remember that I’m talking about non-Hodgkin lymphoma and I’m not an expert,” she clarified. “Second, I encourage you to talk to your doctor about the warning signs, but also to be proactive and get your blood tested at least twice a year.”
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, which is essential for the body’s immune defense. According to the Mayo Clinic, “In non-Hodgkin lymphoma, white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and can form tumors throughout the body.”
Sandhu’s candid revelation underlines the importance of regular health checks and being aware of the body’s signals. As a prominent figure in the social media industry and an avid marathon runner, his experience highlights that cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their fitness level or lifestyle.
Sandhu wants to urge people to prioritise their health and spread awareness about non-Hodgkin lymphoma by sharing her experience. Her message is very clear: taking an active and well-informed approach to one’s own health can have a significant impact.
