President Donald Trump said Thursday that he will nominate Dr. Nicole Saphier as the next U.S. surgeon general after withdrawing his previous pick, Dr. Casey Means, whose Senate confirmation process stalled for months.

Saphier is a breast radiologist and was previously a contributor to Fox News. She is listed as director of breast imaging at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center-Monmouth and author of several books. That includes a book criticizing the US response to the Covid-19 pandemic, arguing that political agendas often overshadowed scientific guidance.

“Nicole is a STAR doctor who has spent her career guiding women facing breast cancer through their diagnosis and treatment while tirelessly advocating to increase early detection and prevention of cancer, while at the same time working with men and women in all other forms of cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Thursday.

“She is also an AMAZING COMMUNICATOR, making it easier for all Americans to understand complicated health issues,” Trump continued.

Means was nominated on the recommendation of her close ally, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Her nomination had been stalled in the Senate for more than two months over concerns about her controversial stances on vaccines, contraceptives, pesticides and psychedelics.

His brother, Calley Means, is a senior White House adviser.

Trump also criticized Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-Louisiana, on Thursday, accusing him of hindering Means' nomination.

“I nominated Casey, a strong MAHA warrior, on the recommendation of Secretary Kennedy, who understands the MAHA Movement better than anyone, perhaps with the possible exception of ME!” Trump wrote, adding: “Casey, thank you for your service to our nation!”

Correction: This story has been updated to correct that Nicole Saphier is no longer a Fox News contributor. An earlier version misstated its current function.
