Environment Healthcare artificial intelligence startup on Tuesday a new medical coding model that exceeds doctors by 27%.
Environment uses AI to write clinical notes in real time as doctors record their visits with patients. The company used OpenAI tools to build the new model.
The startup is part of a fiercely competitive market that has taken off as medical care executives seek solutions to help reduce the exhaustion of personnel and discouraging administrative workloads.
The new company model can listen to patient meetings and identify ICD-10 codes, which are internationally standardized classifications for different diseases and conditions. There are about 70,000 ICD-10 codes that are updated regularly and are used to facilitate billing and other reporting processes in medical care.
Environment said his new ICD-10 model can reduce billing errors and help professional doctors and encoders to work more efficiently. The model achieved a “relative improvement of 27% on the doctor's reference points,” according to a statement on Tuesday.
“We are not replacing doctors or encoders,” said Brendan Fortuner, Chief of Engineering of Environment, CNBC in an interview. “What we are doing is freeing them from the administration, and we are solving errors that help medical care be better, safer, more profitable.”
Documenting ICD-10 codes has traditionally been a work task in health care, but it is a crucial way of tracing the results, mortality and morbidity in a standardized way, said Dr. Will Morris, the medical director of Environment.
“If you think about it from a data perspective, it is how you can compare and contrast the clinic A a B, or the health system A a B,” Morris said in an interview. “It is the cornerstone of quality.”
Environment technology is used in more than 40 medical care organizations, such as Cleveland Clinic and UCSF Health. He has raised more than $ 100 million, according to Pitchbook, from investors such as Kleiner Perkins, Andreessen Horowitz and the Openai start fund.
According to reports, the company seeks new capital with an assessment of more than $ 1 billion, according to an information report. The atmosphere declined to comment on the report.
Environment trained his new AI model using OpenAI reinforcement adjustment technology. This technology allows companies to tune the best OpenAI reasoning models for very specific domains, such as medical care.
To validate the model, Ambionce tried it against a set of “gold panel,” said the company. The labels were established by a group of expert doctors who evaluated complex clinical cases and reached an agreement on what were the correct codes.

Then, the company recruited 18 different doctors certified by the Board and compared its performance with the ICD-10 coding precision with the model performance. That comparison showed that environmental technology had 27% better than the doctor's baseline.
“It shows for the first time that an AI system can overcome clinical experts in a very, very important administrative task, especially in coding,” said Fortuner.
Environment already has similar capacities available for other medical codes such as current procedure terminology codes (CPT), and Fortuner said it is exploring how to address other areas such as previous authorizations, use management and coincidence of clinical trials.
The new ICD-10 model of the company will extend to customers during the summer.
“Doing doing well at the point of attention is a fundamental change,” said Morris.
