KARACHI: A case has been filed against the driver involved in an accident in which at least two people were killed and five others injured near Karsaz in Karachi on Monday.
Police and rangers took the driver, identified in the first information report (FIR) as Natasha Danish, to the police station after the accident and seized her jeep.
The woman's vehicle crashed into several vehicles near the Pakistan Maritime Museum, killing a young woman and an elderly man.
The deceased and the injured were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities and treatment respectively.
The dead were identified as Aamna Arif, 26, and Imran Arif, 60, while one of the injured was in critical condition, police said.
According to law enforcement officials, the woman who caused the accident received a head injury while undergoing a CT scan at JPMC.
The detained woman is a resident of the KDA Scheme-I area. She was travelling on the service road near Karsaz when, according to her, her car went out of control and caused the accident.
Her husband also arrived at the police station after receiving information about the incident.
The FIR
Police said the case was lodged by Imtiaz Arif, brother of the deceased, at Bahadurabad police station. They said charges of culpable homicide and negligence have been incorporated in the FIR.
The complainant said he received information about his brother's accident over the phone and when he arrived at JPMC he found his brother and niece dead.
He learned that Natasha had hit her brother's bike from behind, causing the accident. Another motorcyclist, Abdul Salam, was also injured.
Imtiaz said his brother and niece died due to the suspect's “negligence, reckless driving and speeding.”
Police said that since the suspect had a driving license, she will be charged with culpable homicide. They also said that charges of negligence and reckless driving have been added to the FIR.
Meanwhile, police have asked the family for the medical records of the suspect involved in the accident.
Blood and urine samples were taken for the suspect's forensic examination, the police surgeon said.
According to the woman's husband, she takes medication for mental stress.
Police said they were investigating the accident from several angles and were also trying to obtain CCTV footage of the incident.
Rescue sources said the bodies of the father and daughter were kept at the Edhi mortuary and their funeral prayers would be offered after the Asr prayers.
