Where are schools closed in Sindh today?

  • Umarkot DC orders schools to close for two days.

Amid prediction of heavy monsoon rains and floods, several districts in Sindh have announced school holidays after the provincial education department delegated powers to deputy commissioners (DCs) in this regard.

In a letter to all DCs in the province, the Sindh Education Department said a monsoon season was underway in several districts and “is expected to prevail for a few more days.”

Given the intensity of heavy rainfall and damage in the respective districts, the letter said, the deputy commissioners may announce local holidays in schools.

Therefore, exercising the same powers, the Deputy Commissioners of Tando Allahyar, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Sajawal, Jamshoro and Umarkot have announced holidays for all public and private educational institutes on Thursday.

The DCs of Nawabshah and Jamshoro ordered closure of schools for the remaining three days of this week, while the DC of Umarkot ordered closure of schools for two days.

According to figures released by the Mirpurkhas deputy commissioner's office during six days of rain from August 23 to 28, Nagarparkar received 231 mm of rain, Kanri 205 mm, Mithi 174 mm and Chacharo 162 mm.

The DC report said that in the last 24 hours alone, Umarkot experienced 118 mm of rain, Kanri 92 mm, Chacharo 90 mm, Mithi 77 mm, Pathoro 75 mm and Samaro 63 mm.

From 8 am to 9 pm on Wednesday, the Met Office said, the highest rainfall was recorded in Mirpurkhas, 75 mm, Chorr recorded 63.5 mm, Badin 59 mm, Mithi 32 mm, Sanghar 28 mm, Tando Jam 27 mm, Hyderabad Airport 21 mm, Hyderabad City 19 mm, Thatta 6 mm, Shaheed Benazirabad 4 mm, Sakrand 3 mm, Larkana and Mohenjo Daro recorded 1 mm each.
