A new study shows that there is a place in Hollywood where diversity efforts have been successful: transmit films.
Published on Wednesday, part 2 of the Hollywood 2025 Diversity Report of UCLA discovered that the proportion of women and color people who work in key entertainment work have increased since the previous edition of the annual study. The report also found that the majority of the 20 best transmission films released in 2024 presented various casts.
“People throughout the country support diverse films, regardless of whether they are in a theater or in the comfort of their sofa,” said Ana-Christina Ramón, co-founder of the report and director of the Entertainment Research Initiative and UCLA media, in a statement. Part 1 of the Hollywood Diversity Report of 2025, published in February, discovered in a similar way that the theater films with cast that reflect the diversity of the real world had better results in the box office.
“The transmission platforms are one of the few places where stories and faces that reflect people in this country can be found on and off the screen,” he added.
According to the study, one in two clues was played by color actors in the best transmission films of the year. In general terms, people of color and women in lead transmission cinema roles exceeded proportional representation.
Color actors starred in 51% of higher transmission launches in 2024 (compared to 45% in 2023). In comparison, color actors represented 25.2% of the main papers in the best 2024 theatrical films (below 29.2%). People of color represent 44.3% of the American population.
But when the demography of the actors is further broken down, the study shows that Latinx and Asia actors are still underrepresented among the lead transmission roles. Latinx actors represented 6% of lead transmission roles, while Asian actors represented only 2%. (According to census data, 19.5% of the American population is identified as Hispanic or Latin, and 6.4% as Asian).
The women, who represented 51% of the potential transmission clients in 2023, saw an increase to 61% in 2024. The study also found that, although actors with known disabilities won ground in 2024, remain sub -present on the screen.
This last UCLA study examined 100 of the best English broadcast films launched in 2024, as well as 175 cinematographic agreements that were documented that year. Among the information analyzed were the demography of the actors, writers and directors involved in the films and agreements, as well as the gender and budget of the cinema.
Like the findings in the UCLA theatrical report, the Transmission Report found that women and people of color handle the audience of the best transmission films in 2024.
“Our data shows that various narrators and actors attract and involve people of each demographic group,” said Jade Abston, co -author of the report and doctorate candidate in film media studies, in a statement. “They are not only seeing it, they share it with their followers on social networks and talk about it online.”
A key difference between transmission and theatrical films, shows the study, is the general budget of films. The study found that although 65.5% of the upper transmission launches in 2024 had budgets below $ 20 million, 65.3% of the theatrical films that year had higher budgets than 26% had budgets of $ 100 million or more. Only 4.4% of the transmission films had budgets in that range in 2024.
The report also found that the proportion of color people when directing and writing roles in transmission films saw an increase in 2024. Thirty percent of higher transmission films had color writers, while 41% were directed by color directors. Women, on the other hand, saw a 28% drop in directors and 37% of writers, 31% and 41% in 2023, respectively.
