KARACHI: Karachi is likely to experience light to heavy rainfall from Tuesday to Thursday, meteorologist Owais Haider said. Geo news on Sunday.
In a weekly forecast for the port city, the weather analyst said rain was likely in suburban areas of the megacity on Monday.
He warned that there was a threat of urban flooding as the next wave of rains could be the most powerful of this monsoon season.
Meanwhile, Haider added, there were also chances of rain in different parts of Karachi on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said that Karachi's weather is expected to remain hot and humid for the next 24 hours.
According to the Met Office, the current temperature in the city was 30°C and the maximum temperature was likely to reach 36°C in the city.
Air humidity is at 70% and sea breezes are returning. “Sea winds are blowing at a speed of 27 kilometres per hour,” the weather service said.
Rain emergency in Karachi
Amid predictions of heavy rains in southern parts of the country, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Saturday imposed a rain emergency in Karachi.
The PMD, in its latest update, said that a fresh rain system located over West Bengal is likely to move westwards during the next few days, which would bring strong monsoon currents in southern parts of Pakistan on the evening of August 25.
He added that heavy rains are expected from August 26 to 29 under this system, prompting the relevant authorities to take emergency measures.
Taking into account the predictions, Karachi Mayor Wahab announced that a rain emergency has been imposed to deal with the post-rain situation in the metropolis.
He added that instructions have been given to municipal services of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the leaves of all the staff involved have been suspended to deal with the expected rains.
According to the Met Office, areas of Sindh likely to receive rain include Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Tando Allayar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Mithi, Mirpur Khas, Umarkot, Matiari , Sanghar, Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Jacobabad and Naushero Feroze.
NDMA Flood Alert
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued a warning to relevant departments to remain alert in anticipation of torrential rains in Sindh and Punjab from August 26 to 29.
The authority warned that apart from flash flooding in local mountain streams and torrents in Punjab, coastal flooding may also occur along the Makran coast and in low-lying areas of Dadu, Hyderabad, Badin and Shahdadpur district of Sindh.
The NDMA, in its statement, urged all relevant authorities and the public to take necessary precautions to mitigate the possible impacts of flooding and heavy rainfall.
He also ordered departments to alert emergency response teams and mobilize resources to ensure a rapid response to any situation that might arise.
The public has also been advised to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities.
