The showrunner of 'The Sopranos', David Chase, regrets that the television medium is becoming normalized with mediocre content
For The sopranos creator David Chase, primetime television is over; Instead, the quality of the medium is collapsing.
The executive sounded the red alarm on the 25th anniversary of the hit HBO crime drama.
During an interview with The Times UK, the award-winning producer lamented, “We're going back to where we were,” noting, “They're going to have commercials [on streamers like Prime Video].” Chase said he recently tried to come up with a project about a high-end escort and was “told to keep it simple.”
Expressing his frustration, the creator added: “We like multitasking better.”
He added: “We seem to be confused and the audience can't focus on things, so we can't do anything that makes much sense, that grabs our attention and requires the audience to focus.”
He continued: “And as for the streaming executives? It is getting worse. “We are going back to where we were.”
Referring to the post-soprano as “A problem,” he shared. “a temporary problem of 25 years. And to be clear, I'm not just talking about The Sopranos, but a lot of other enormously talented people for whom I feel increasingly bad.”
