The new explosive album of Deftones 'Private Music' meets the moment in front

Almost 40 years after the dectones race, the band raised in Sacramento is anything but an inherited act. As demonstrated by the visceral loyalty of innumerable fans of half of his age, at his feet while they act on stage, the band is still as explosive as they were when they conquered the Warped tour at the end of the 90s.

The increase in popularity of the band era with generations of fans who lost their first (and second) round inspires and surprises them.

“It scares me when I feel and, in retrospect, think about it,” says Chinese Moreno about the longevity of deptons. Sitting behind the stage in a Victoria Arena, Canada, during a break from the trial prior to the gout of the band, starting in Vancouver on Friday, Moreno, 52, is relaxed while discussing its place in the Hard Rock landscape.

Since approximately 2022, the singer has noticed that the crowds in some of the knowledge and greetings of the band were younger. In some cases, fans in their adolescence and early 20 were presenting their parents the band's catalog, including their classic of the early century, “White Pony”.

This height has only grown as elements of the aggressive amorphous sound of dectones, which has post-hargore, tripulate and, more relevant elements for its rebirth, Shoegaze, has attracted a much younger audience. They have broken themselves to be a cult and a critical favorite from the Nü-metal scene until they are widely appreciated as one of the most important and influential bands of that time.

“I am not a great person of social networks,” says Moreno about the environment that has allowed a new generation to discover defitones. “There are positive sides, like all noise, you can share music. It is good that everyone is much more connected to be able to share it like that.”

However, it is aware that, according to online resurgence, the dectones do not I have to He releases a new album. Even so, see this influx of a younger admirers vigorized the band. He has driven the band to push not only on stage, but in the study.

“Having all this new generation of eyes on us and more attention now than we have had in decades. So why not accept it?” He says. “I love having met many parents and sons, parents and daughters, and they are in the Together as a union experience, and to talk about some kind of art on which they both connected … it's really great.”

The band also knew that if they were going to write and record, it had to be for the right reasons.

Record “you can't be where the label needs [the album]Or we need money, “says Moreno.” We have made records in those circumstances before, and stinks the fun of the experience. We are mistreated in that way where we only want to do something if it is something we want to do. The moment someone tells us that we have to do it, then we fight it. ”

With the band members now scattered throughout the United States, Deftones could not wait to return to the studio together, just like adolescents when they had a space that felt more like a club house. As Moreno says, they were excited to “experiment and hang out together. Locking us in a room for six hours a day, five days a week, it was fun. It was like returning to the club house again.”

With “Private Music”, Deftones once again joined forces with Nick Raskulinecz, who produced “Diamond Eyes” and “Koi no Yokan” of 2012 (“Doube, we have to finish the triumph!”, Says Moreno, says Raskulinecz every time they saw each other). Throughout the last year and half, the band and Raskulinecz worked in a variety of sessions of the 11 songs. album. Without a definitive schedule to launch its tenth studio album, it allowed a much more relaxed and pleasant atmosphere than before. That said, the time between “OHMS” and “private music” of 2020 was the longest period among dectone albums.

“We are in a mental framework where it is as if we did not have to make an album,” he says. “He kicked us in the back. If people talk about holding us to a certain standard and we press ourselves. Therefore, the fact that we will do it, we could make it great.”

A band so far in his career is usually in his time as Victoria. Write, record, throw an album, go on tour, mainly touch the successes, sprinkle a new song, repeat. Not poor. Throughout this album, which is another significant achievement, the band mixes The Moody and Melodic to create an album that doubles the genus Full of Fire and Fury. I seek nothing more than the equally bombastic “My mind is a mountain” and “Locked Club”, the threatening “ecdysis”, the Altis “I think of you all the time” and the thrust of the “cxz” methodical “cxz”. Throughout the sessions, which included three remaining additional songs in several states, Deftones wrote and recorded lots of songs in different places, which according to Moreno allowed a respective track to have his own sound personality as a product of his surroundings.

“'I think of you all the time' was written in Malibu at 8 in the morning and it was quite fast,” he says. “We put it aside then, after dinner that night, we made a coffee and we went out and we finished it. While with 'Ecdysis', it was the last song we wrote, and it was while we were in the studio. We were looking at our collection of songs that we already had and simply went, like, 'Ok, where does it fit into this lot of songs?' We wanted something irregular and also a bit strange that it was more experimental but with an aggressive approach. “

As their tours have become larger, external factors have given the band a new appreciation for their continuous success. During the emergence of Coachella of 2024 of the band, guitarist Stephen Carpenter felt that his performance was not up to his standard, telling Zane Like Lowe of the Apple radio that was “completely out of that for both shows. He barely had enough energy to stand up. Everything I could think of during those shows was:” Please, simply did not fall on stage. “

A few years before Carpenter found out about his health problems, Moreno became sober. These changes allowed bandmates, friends since they were teenagers, they approached even more, despite any wrong notion that they have disagree. Although Carpenter does not travel internationally with defitones due to his condition, when the band was on the road in the United States earlier this year, he and Moreno were business partners. They pushed to remain in their respective clues that change the lifestyle.

“I think we are both proud of each other,” says Moreno about his changes. “He is so in it. He is an obsessive person about many things, and is now obsessed with his blood sugar and his health. It is parallel to my sobriety. So we got on the bus after a show, and we are all in our diet. With my sobriety, I think he sees me as a better version of myself. “

“Private music” does not stand out not only as a wonderfully cohesive work work with a relentless energy that is the next step in the catalog of dectones, but it is also a well -balanced album. It is a logical sound step for the Universe Deftones. The band has also been building its annual Festival Dia de los Deftones. The alignment of the sixth edition, which will take place in November in San Diego, includes Virginia Beach, Virginia, Hip-Hop Heroes Clipse, Amada Metal Band Deafheaven, Rico Nasty, 2Hollis and more. When comparing the healing of the festival with the compilation of a mixtape, dectones is the common thread that unites these various artists, which Moreno calls “a fun experiment.”

Decades later, it is the music of Deftones and the sonic spirit adventurous that keeps the crowds returning, anticipating the next movement of the group. It allows them to gradually build on successes without being overwhelmed by the past. Now, it has moved so quickly and exponentially that they have barely had time to stop their collective breath, with another section of sand dates and a couple of co-cabeza stadium programs with a system of a file in the file.

“I am excited to be busy,” says Moreno. “I am the type of person who has been lucky to have done this for almost my adult life. We could not leave and travel 'Ohms' after its launch, and this is a very different moment. I really love this lot of songs, so I am eager to go to play them and stay busy over the next few years.”
