John Galliano is a renowned fashion designer who has plenty of experience designing outfits for the most important celebrities. But when he worked on Princess Diana's dress, the late royal left him completely in shock.
Remembering the incident in the Hulu docuseries En Vogue: The 90sThe 63-year-old actress said the Princess of Wales was invited to the Met Gala in 1996 by her friend Liz Tilberis, editor of Harper's Bazaar.
The British designer was working with Dior at the time he was selected to create a stunning look for Diana.
“I remember one day we all got into an old van and went to London, where we met Princess Diana. She had been invited to the Met and was wearing one of my dresses,” she said.
“It was like a blessing. I mean, wow!” the former Givenchy creative director continued. “We went to Kensington Palace and talked about the drawings. I was trying to make the design pink, but she didn't want it. 'No, not pink!' It was really, really fun.”
For Diana's first and only appearance at the Met, John designed a striking slip dress.
“So we did the dress and the fittings afterwards, and it was very well done,” we added, “A 'correct' construction.”
In the background, the mother of two had just had a high-profile divorce from King Charles, and was in a rebellious mood, according to Fashionable.
So, much to the surprise of her designer, Diana opted not to wear a corset in the dress to make a fashion statement, the report said.
“Fast forward to the time of the incident and I remember she got out of the car,” he recalled. “I couldn't believe it. She had ripped her corset off.”
“She didn't want to wear the corset,” the iconic designer noted. “She felt so liberated. She had taken off the corset. The dress was much more… sensual,” he emphasized, recalling her electric ascent up the Met stairs.
“I mean, wow! Diana was my first couture client,” John concluded.
