ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Supreme Court lawyer Sher Afzal Khan Marwat on Monday claimed that his house was raided at 2:00 am and those involved in the act were wearing masks.
Marwat made the claims before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) while speaking during a petition regarding recovery of Baloch students.
IHC judge Mohsin Akhtar Kayani marveled at what was happening to Marwat, who was an elected member of parliament and a senior lawyer. He said the PTI leader was not talking about Lakki Marwat but Islamabad.
The court wondered what would happen to a common man in Balochistan if such treatment was extended to an elected legislator in the federal capital.
Earlier in a tweet, Marwat claimed that CTD police raided his house and broke the doors causing damage. “…they stressed my family and staff and confiscated my laptop. I managed to escape from my house and now I am in a safe place. This is an illegal raid and I will challenge IG and SSP Islamabad operation in court for this criminal act; The confiscation of my laptop is illegitimate. It contains my private and professional data, (which may be) subject to misuse. These cowardly tactics will not scare me or force me to take a step back from our mission, which is for a larger cause: the fight for true democracy in Pakistan,” he wrote in X.
Islamabad police denied the claim in X saying that Islamabad police did not raid Marwat's house. The police maintained that fake news was being spread to attract public attention.
Justice Kayani said if the behavior of the inspector general of police was not rectified, then he should be dismissed. He also asked why a raid was carried out at night at the house of the person who was available during the day.
The IHC directed the Home Minister to call the IG of Islamabad and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) to receive a written statement from them in this regard.
“What is happening is known throughout the system, including the judges, but everyone is silent about it. If state institutions do this, who will protect citizens from thieves and robbers? she said, adding that such treatment of an elected supporter of the MNA and SC was shameful.
Marwat suggested putting Islamabad's inspector general behind bars for 10 days to sort everything out.
