Shelley Duvall, the actress whose harrowing scream underscored many of the horrors of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film “The Shining,” has died. She was 75.
Duvall's partner, Daniel Gilroy, confirmed that the actress died Thursday morning at her home in Blanco, Texas, from complications of diabetes. “She had been in a lot of pain lately,” Gilroy said, and had been living in hospice care for several months. “This was not unexpected.”
“I think of her as a bird and now she is free to fly,” he said.
In addition to playing Wendy Torrance, the wife of Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), in “The Shining,” Duvall gave memorable performances in the live-action adaptation of “Popeye,” “Annie Hall” and “3 Women,” among other films.
In 2022, Duvall landed a role in the independent horror film “The Forest Hills,” her first acting job in decades after retreating from the Hollywood spotlight.
