KARACHI: Residents of the port city will finally get some respite from the heat as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast isolated dust storms with rain in some areas today (Monday).

Much-needed rain is expected to hit the metropolis in the afternoon, putting an end to the persistent heatwave that has hit the city in recent weeks.

The Met Office has also predicted that the mercury will rise to 35°C or 37°C. Meanwhile, the lowest temperature recorded in the last 24 hours was 31°C.

Winds blowing from the west and southwest are currently measured at 12 kilometers per hour, with humidity levels of 73%, according to PMD.

Despite the expected relief from the rain, the Met Office warns that the weather is likely to remain hot and humid over the next 24 hours, along with stormy conditions.

The meteorological department has also indicated that these stormy conditions could persist until tomorrow.

Emergency imposed due to rain

The Clifton Township Council (CBC) of Karachi, ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, on Saturday imposed a rain emergency in the areas under its jurisdiction by appointing special teams for timely drainage of rainwater.

A CBC spokesperson said in a statement that 1,288 employees have been designated for special duties under its emergency rain plan, including 638 in seven sectors, while another 650 employees will work on stormwater drainage.

The board also identified low-lying areas that could be affected following the torrential rains. Special teams have been assigned to carry out specific tasks in DHA Phases I to VIII, Clifton Blocks 8 and 9 and the market area.

He added that heavy machinery would be deployed in the affected areas, while additional equipment would be deployed in the commercial avenues of Khayaban-e-Shujaat, Khayaban-e-Shehbaz, Khayaban-e-Badar and Khayaban-e-Tariq.
