It was deja vu on Saturday when the Screen Actors Guild Awards recognized almost all of the same performers as the Golden Globe and Emmy Awards last month.
“Oppenheimer” reigned supreme in three of the film categories, expanding its front-runner status heading into the Oscars on March 10. HBO drama “Succession,” FX/Hulu comedy “The Bear” and Netflix limited series “Beef” dominated the TV side.
Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri won individual awards and “The Bear” won the award for ensemble cast in a comedy series. “Succession” had “one last hurray,” capping its critically acclaimed final season with a drama series win.
In one of the few surprises of the night, Pedro Pascal took home the statuette for male actor in a drama series for his role in the post-apocalyptic HBO show “The Last of Us.” Elizabeth Debicki won the same award for her nuanced portrayal of Princess Diana in “The Crown,” delivering another win for ceremony host Netflix, which broadcast the SAG Awards live for the first time. The new platform and format could be a boon for the awards show, which had seen ratings decline on TNT and TBS.
The ceremony was the first since SAG-AFTRA reached an agreement with the major studios to end their historic strike and ratified a new contract. Recognizing the historic moment, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher gave another fiery speech and warned against artificial intelligence: “AI will trap us in a matrix where none of us will know what is real.”
“You survived the longest strike in the history of our union with courage and conviction,” he said. “Their collective dignity and perseverance to stand up and say, 'We deserve better because we are better' resulted in a historic billion-dollar settlement. Their solidarity ignited workers around the world, triggering what will always be remembered as the hot summer of work.”
“Oppenheimer’s” Cillian Murphy and “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone came one step closer to landing the Oscar in March.
