Queen Margrethe II of Denmark celebrates her 84th birthday today, her first since her abdication in January.
Margaret II announced her abdication as Queen of Denmark during her New Year's Eve address to the nation on December 31, 2023. She was succeeded by her eldest son, King Frederick X, on January 14, 2024.
The Danish royal family took to Instagram and shared the Queen's stunning photos to mark her special day.
The royal family's post translates as “Today is Her Majesty Queen Margaret's 84th birthday.
“New photographs of Her Majesty taken at Fredensborg Castle have been published today.”
It also says: “In the same place, Queen Margaret will celebrate her birthday privately today in the company of family and friends.”
Earlier in January, Queen Margaret made history by being the first Danish monarch to voluntarily renounce the throne in almost 900 years.
Denmark's monarchy traces its origins to the 10th-century Viking king Gorm the Elder, making it the oldest in Europe and one of the oldest in the world.
