Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday thanked his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for congratulating him on assuming the top job, in a rare public exchange between the heads of the two arch-rival states.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz was elected Prime Minister of the country for the second consecutive time after securing 201 votes with the backing of allied parties, mainly the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) last week.

Shehbaz's opponent, Omar Ayub Khan, candidate of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), lost the prime ministerial election in the National Assembly after he managed to secure only 92 votes. .

Soon after his election as prime minister, congratulations began pouring in from world leaders and diplomats congratulating him on becoming the country's chief executive.

Apart from Modi, PM Shehbaz also thanked other heads of state in separate posts on X.
