ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during his five-day official visit to the United States.
He is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
In his address, the Prime Minister will highlight Pakistan's perspective on a number of international and regional issues of concern, including the Kashmir dispute and the Palestine question.
Prime Minister Shehbaz will reaffirm Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateralism and support for the role of the United Nations in promoting global peace, security and prosperity.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, he is scheduled to attend several high-level meetings, including debates on the existential threats posed by rising sea levels and the UN Security Council's open debate on “Leadership for Peace.”
He will hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders and will also visit UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
He will also meet with World Bank President Ajay Banga and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
More than 130 heads of state and government from around the world will attend the UNGA session.
Today's agenda
Prime Minister Shehbaz will participate in the reception hosted by UN chief Guterres for heads of member countries, where the prime minister will also have informal meetings with heads of various countries on Tuesday.
He will then also attend the opening event of the 2024 UNGA session.
On the sidelines, the Prime Minister will meet with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said on September 19 that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and senior government officials will accompany Prime Minister Shehbaz during his visit to the United States, which will end on September 27.
