FAISALABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader Raja Riaz has leveled a range of allegations against former Rawalpindi commissioner Liaqat Chatha, including receiving hundreds of millions of rupees and an apartment in New York of Pakistanis abroad.

During a press conference in Faisalabad, former opposition leader Riaz said Chatha was sold for Rs 250 million and a flat in New York was given to Pakistanis living abroad. News reported on Monday.

“I want to tell you about your past. He has worked in Faisalabad for 20 years and was the most corrupt magistrate. He falsely accused the chief election commissioner and the chief justice of corruption after receiving money close to his retirement,” he alleged.

The PML-N leader also asked the authorities concerned to place the former commissioner's name on the Exit Control List (ECL) and conduct an inquiry into his allegations.

“Liaqat Chatha's name should appear in the ECL and an investigation should be launched. Chatha's latest assignment was given by Usman Buzdar for Rs 50 crore,” he alleged. He said the PTI tried to repeat May 9 last day but failed.

In a dramatic development on Saturday, Rawalpindi Divisional Commissioner Liaqat Chatha had tendered his resignation, which he claimed was out of “guilty conscience” for inciting large-scale electoral fraud in the garrison town, further raising the stakes. political mercury in the country.

At a press conference at the Rawalpindi cricket stadium, Chatha announced that he would resign from his position, admitting that he had done injustice to the people of his city.

Rawalpindi Division comprises 13 seats in the National Assembly, in which 11 Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidates were successful, while one was won by an independent candidate and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). each. The division also has 27 provincial seats, of which the PML-N won 15 and 11 independent seats.

The commissioner, in the rare press conference, had taken responsibility for the “rigging” in the Rawalpindi Division. “We have turned the losers into winners with a margin of 50,000 votes,” he had stated, turning himself in before the authorities.
