Petition to annul February 8 election set for hearing

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday posted a petition seeking to annul the February 8 general elections for hearing on February 19 (Monday). Geographic news reported.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa will hear the plea. The court will also include Justice Musarrat Hilali and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar.

The high court has issued notice to the complainant, Ali Khan. Based on accusations of manipulation, the petitioner has attempted to re-hold elections.

Several political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), have leveled allegations of manipulation in the general elections.

The final results of the February 8 elections were delayed inordinately, raising questions about the transparency of the elections.

The United States has also urged Pakistani authorities to conduct an independent investigation into allegations of irregularities and fraud during the country's February 8 general election through its legal system.

SHC forms court to hear manipulation allegations

Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court (SHC) chief justice has formed a bench to hear petitions related to rigging in the February 8 general elections. The announcement was made by the SHC Registrar in a notification on Friday.

According to the notification, the main seat of the high court will hear the election pleas in Karachi. The notification said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Sindh had written a letter seeking formation of a tribunal to hear petitions related to election rigging.

Additionally, two courts have been created for Karachi division. Bench one will consist of Justice Muhammad Kareem Khan Agha, and Bench Two will consist of Justice Adnan Iqbal Chaudhry.

Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro, Justice Amjad Ali Sahito and Justice Muhammad Saleem Jessar will hear the election petitions in Sukkur, Hyderabad and Larkana divisions respectively.
