The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday named wicketkeeper-batsman Muhammad Rizwan as vice-captain of the T20 team.
The board announced the development on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“@iMRizwanPak has been named vice-captain of Pakistan’s T20I team,” the PCB wrote in its post.
Rizwan will replace Shadab Khan in the coveted role in the team, taking the reins as captain Shaheen Shah Afridi’s deputy in cricket’s shortest format team.
It may be noted that Rizwan was recently favored by former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi for the captaincy position instead of left-arm fast Shaheen for the T20 team, a comment that caught the attention of many.
Speaking at an event in Australia, Afridi praised the wicketkeeper-batsman and preferred him over his son-in-law Shaheen for the T20 captaincy.
The legendary all-rounder of his time said: “[I admire Rizwan’s] level of hard work and concentration. His best quality, the one I like the most, is focusing solely on his game and not paying attention to who does what and what doesn’t. He is really a fighter!
“I want to see it [Rizwan] as T20 captain, but by mistake, Shaheen was made skipper,” Afridi said in a lighter tone while looking towards the left-arm fast, who was sitting behind him in the event.
