Most 2024 Emmy winners aren't filming in Los Angeles

The Emmy Awards are an event held in Los Angeles.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were held on Sunday at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The awards are given out by the Television Academy, based in North Hollywood. And many of the major networks and studios are primarily located in and around the city.

There were even moments in the broadcast that felt like small reflections of Los Angeles’ diverse communities: Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna presented the award for directing a limited or anthology series in Spanish, and Hiroyuki Sanada spoke in Japanese during the win for the drama series “Shōgun.” They are among the most widely spoken languages in Los Angeles County.

But this year's Emmy telecast was also a reminder of how much television is now being made outside of Los Angeles. The ceremony's Canadian hosts, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, created and starred in the charming, Emmy-winning Canadian television show “Schitt's Creek.” And most of the shows that won awards during the telecast were filmed outside of Los Angeles.

Of the 12 shows that took home at least one of the 26 awards handed out at the Emmys on Sunday, only the Las Vegas-set “Hacks,” which won for comedy series, lead actress in a comedy and comedy writing, and the New York-set “The Morning Show,” which took home outstanding supporting actor in a drama series, are primarily filmed in Los Angeles.

The other ten series, including the award-winning “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and “Baby Reindeer,” were mostly filmed in other states or abroad. “Baby Reindeer,” “The Crown,” “The Traitors” and “Slow Horses” were largely filmed in the U.K.

Emmy nominees and winners can't offer a complete picture of the state of Hollywood production or even an accurate map of current industry trends, but at a time when local television jobs are in short supply, it's hard to miss the statistic.

Film and TV production in Los Angeles has yet to recover from the double Hollywood strike. Local filming was down 12.4% year-over-year between April and June, according to the nonprofit FilmLA, which tracks permits for filming on location in the city. Reality TV production plummeted 57% compared with the previous year.

Here's the list of shows that won at least one Primetime Emmy Award on Sunday, along with their primary filming location.
