Monsoon rains to begin in Karachi from tomorrow

KARACHI: After suffering scorching heat, Karachi is finally expected to get some respite as monsoon rains are forecast from July 8 to 10 in the city, a weather expert said. Geo news.

Meteorologist Owais Haider said the metropolis was expected to experience drizzle in the afternoon or evening today (Sunday). He added that a “thunder cell” was expected to form in the northeast.

However, the temperature is expected to range between 37°C and 39°C as the intensity of the heat is likely to increase during the day, he said.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also confirmed that Karachi may experience showers today in the afternoon or evening. However, the overall weather will remain hot and humid for the next 24 hours, it said.

The Met Office said winds were blowing at a speed of 17 kilometres from the west and humidity in the air was recorded at 74%.

The mercury was predicted to rise to 37°C.

In view of the upcoming monsoon season, Karachi's Clifton Township Council (CBC) on Saturday imposed a rain emergency in the areas under its jurisdiction by appointing special teams for timely drainage of rainwater.

A CBC spokesperson said in a statement that 1,288 employees have been designated for special duties under its emergency rain plan, including 638 in seven sectors, while another 650 employees will work on stormwater drainage.

The board also identified low-lying areas that could be affected following the torrential rains. Special teams have been assigned to carry out specific tasks in DHA Phases I to VIII, Clifton Blocks 8 and 9 and the market area.

He added that heavy machinery would be deployed in the affected areas, while additional equipment would be deployed in the commercial avenues of Khayaban-e-Shujaat, Khayaban-e-Shehbaz, Khayaban-e-Badar and Khayaban-e-Tariq.
