Pakistan's general elections are underway and more than 128 million people are exercising their democratic right to elect their representatives in national and provincial assemblies (in 855 constituencies) in the world's fifth-largest democracy.

The 2024 elections surpassed the previous ones in 2018 in several aspects, including a record budget allocation of Rs 48 billion, a substantial increase in the number of voters exceeding 50% of the total population, an unprecedented proportion of independent candidates , a total of almost 18,000 candidates and a substantial amount of paper is needed to print 260 million ballots.

More than 1.4 million electoral staff perform their duties in 90,675 polling stations, of which 16,766 have been declared extremely sensitive. To ensure voter participation, February 8 has been declared a holiday.

Voting, which began at 8am, is expected to continue till 5pm across the country but may be extended if the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decides otherwise to ensure that no voter is deprived of voting rights. their right to vote.

Mobile and Internet services are suspended across the country due to the security situation. Major political parties, including Pakistan People's Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have approached the commission seeking immediate restoration of services.

The election results are expected to be complete a few hours after midnight and the full compilation could take place in the early hours of Friday, through the ECP Results Management System.

One hour after the voting concludes, the media will be able to broadcast the results.
