LAHORE: At least six people were killed due to lightning and dust storms in different areas of Punjab a day earlier, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said in a statement on Saturday.

A PDMA spokesperson, in a statement, said at least five people were also injured due to the dust storm in the province.

The lightning strikes occurred in Sialkot and Rawalpindi districts, the spokesperson added.

Punjab PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia directed the deputy commissioners of the respective districts to provide best medical treatment to the injured.

The official said that the families of the deceased will receive financial assistance.

He said all rescue and other institutions were on alert to deal with any adverse situation.

DG PDMA also urged citizens to stay in safer places during adverse weather conditions and avoid going outdoors during storms.

Last month, lightning strikes claimed at least 24 lives in Balochistan and Punjab as heavy rains lashed the provinces, officials said.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement today, the PDMA warned that a heat wave is expected in Punjab until Monday, during which the temperature may rise up to 45°C to 48°C. Radio Pakistan reported.

The PDMA spokesperson said the heat wave may be severe in southern Punjab, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, DG Khan and Multan districts.

All concerned departments have been directed to remain alert to deal with any adverse situation. The spokesperson said citizens are being made aware of the dangers of the heat wave through the media.

People can contact PDMA helpline 1129 or Rescue 1122 in case of any emergency.
