The British monarch has just marked the beginning of Holyrood Week, which is a week-long stay by the King in Scotland to celebrate Scottish culture, community and achievements every year in July.

However, this year the visit will not last more than two days due to the upcoming general elections in London, which are scheduled for the end of this week, according to Daily Mail.

After spending the weekend at Birkhall, their home in Scotland, the King and Queen arrived in Edinburgh by helicopter.

The Handover of the Keys Ceremony took place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Sovereign received the keys to the City of Edinburgh on a red velvet cushion from the Lord Provost.

Handing over the keys to the city to the King, Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said: “We, the Lord Provost and the members of the Edinburgh City Council, welcome Your Majesty to the capital city of your ancient and hereditary Kingdom of Scotland and offer for your gracious acceptance the keys to Your Majesty’s good City of Edinburgh.”

The King returned the keys to the Lord Provost untouched as tradition dictates and replied: “I return these keys, being perfectly convinced that they cannot be placed in better hands than those of the Lord Provost and Aldermen of my good city of Edinburgh.”
