Kate Middleton was left feeling uncomfortable by Meghan Markle's unusual American habit, it has emerged.
In 2017, when Prince Harry introduced Kate to Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex leaned in to hug her, which made Kate nervous.
In an interview with the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, the Duchess said: “When Will and Kate came to the house and I met her for the first time, they came to dinner, I remember she was wearing ripped jeans and she was barefoot. I liked giving hugs. I've always loved giving hugs, I didn't realise that that's really shocking to a lot of British people.”
Meghan recalled that there was a “formality on the outside” that “carried over into the interior,” which was “amazing.”
Harry wrote: “I introduced him to Meg, who leaned over and gave him a hug, which completely freaked him out.”
She continued: “He leaned back. Willy didn't hug many strangers, while Meg hugged most. The moment was a classic collision of cultures, like a flashlight, which I found funny and charming. Looking back later, though, I wondered if it was more than that. Maybe Willy expected Meg to curtsy?”
