The Smile have suspended their tour after guitarist Jonny Greenwood was hospitalized with an infection.
The trio, comprised of Radiohead members Greenwood and Thom York and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, said on Instagram Friday that it had to cancel its August European tour due to Greenwood's condition. The three-time Grammy winner “became seriously ill from an infection that required emergency hospital treatment,” Smile said in a statement, which Radiohead posted on its story.
“Fortunately, he is now out of danger and will soon return home,” the letter said.
The band continued: “The medical team in charge of Jonny’s care have instructed us to cancel all engagements until he has had time to fully recover. For that reason, Smile’s European tour in August is cancelled.”
Formed in 2021, The Smile were scheduled to kick off their European tour on August 13 with a concert at Sigulda Castle in Latvia. The “Wall of Eyes” musicians were scheduled to play venues in Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and France before closing out the European leg with a show in Marina Norte, Spain, on August 28.
The band said fans will receive refunds from their ticket providers and added that it wishes Greenwood a “speedy recovery.”
