There goes the hero of West Canaan High School.
“Varsity Blues” actor James Van Der Beek donned a family uniform to shed a pigskin amid his battle with cancer in an Instagram video shared Monday, and his wife Kimberly was in the comments to cheer him on.
“You're a wizard. Getting better, baby!!” she wrote in response to the post. His comment was accompanied by three heart eyes emoji. Van Der Beek revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer.
In the short clip, Van Der Beek wears a white soccer jersey with the number 4 and the name Moxon on the back. He played backup quarterback Jonathan “Mox” Moxon in the 1999 coming-of-age film set in Texas.
“Maybe they were fun plays we made in the soccer sequences for away games… but I always loved wearing the white varsity gear,” Van Der Beek wrote in the caption of the video showing his “favorite jersey.” He also shared that there are limited quantities of the commemorative jersey available for fans to purchase with or without his autograph. The actor sold a similar offering last year. Proceeds “will go directly to families receiving cancer treatment,” according to their website.
Van Der Beek went on to thank his fans for their outpouring of support since sharing his diagnosis.
“Last year when I launched the Blues jersey I was blown away by the love and support I received from all of you,” he wrote. “It has meant more than I can ever express… Thank you for the love, the prayers, the support and for making this shirt mean something much bigger than a movie. Infinitely grateful for all of you.”
Earlier this month, the “Dawson's Creek” actor announced that he is also auctioning off memorabilia from his personal collection to help pay for his cancer treatments.
